What is the Newborn Knitted Hat Pattern and Why Do You Need It?

As a knitting enthusiast, I frequently need new patterns for all things baby! And let’s face it, I love knitting newborn baby hats. They are quick and I really enjoy working with baby yarn because it is usually soft and pretty.

Oftentimes, I find myself needing to baby gifts for friends, family, and co-workers. I don’t always have time to work up a larger gift, but some onesies and a matching baby hat or two make a wonderful and practical gift.

Newborn knitted hats look adorable in pictures, but also they help keep baby’s head warm.

My co-workers and I also make around 100 baby hats each year to donate to local hospitals, shelters, and other emergency services. So our group is always in need of cute new patterns!

How to Work the Newborn Knitted Hat Pattern

The newborn knitted hat pattern “Tabitha” by designer Martha Johnson of Fiddlestyx Studios is cute and fun while also still being fairly simple to make.

It is also a versatile pattern as it includes instructions for the following sizes: newborn, 3 to 6 months, 6 to 12 months, toddler, child, and adult.

The pattern is in English and written using standard U.S. knitting terms.

It is worked in stockinette stitch and has an i-cord threaded near the brim to help secure it in place so it isn’t falling off of baby’s head.

There is also a flower topper that is knitted separately and then sewn on top of the hat. However, the flower topper can also be left off and replaced with just the pom pom.

The “Tabitha” newborn knitted hat pattern is considered an intermediate skill level.

The following skills are needed: knitting in the round, basic increase, basic decrease, knitting an i-cord, and making pom poms.

Gauge is important for this pattern. The gauge needed is: 5 stitches = 1 inch or 20 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm)
