What is the Rice Stitch Knitting Pattern?
The rice stitch knitting pattern is a great stitch for beginner knitters to learn. It creates a nice texture that is perfect for several kinds of projects.
It is easy to learn and very versatile.
For example, the texture is great for washcloths, blankets, and scarves!
I like to use the rice stitch to make entire projects. Washcloths are a great way to practice the rice stitch while making something you can use.
Washcloths are quick to work up and many people love receiving them as gifts. You can’t lose!
How to Work the Rice Stitch Knitting Pattern
If working flat with straight needles, follow these instructions.
- Cast on a multiple of 2 and add 1 (example: 20 +1 = 21)
- Row 1: purl into the first stitch, knit into the loop at the back of the stitch, continue in this manner through the row.
- Row 2: Knit all the way across the row.
- Alternate Row 1 and Row 2 until your desired size is reached for your project.
The rice stitch can also be worked in the round using the following instructions.
- Cast on a multiple of 2 and add 1.
- Row 1: knit into the first stitch, purl into the loop at the back of the stitch, continue in this manner through the row.
- Row 2: Purl all the way across the row.
- Alternate Row 1 and Row 2 until your desired size is reached for your project.
Finally, to end the rice stitch you will cast off just as you would in most knitting projects.
Patterns Using the Rice Stitch Knitting Pattern
Here are a couple of patterns I’ve found that use the rice stitch.
Rice Stitch Hat Adult
Beanies are always a great go-to when learning new stitches. This is a fun pattern by Etsy store handknitsbyElena combines rice stitch and stockinette stitch creating an interesting texture.
Play around with the colors of course and make it your own. Leave the flower off if you’re not keen on big flowers on beanies.
Wrist Warmer Knitting Pattern
I don’t know about you, but often I find my hands get very cold while working at the computer. Wrist warmers, or fingerless gloves, are super helpful in combating the cold!
The wrist warmer pattern by RelaxingwithYarn is a little more advanced, but a good way to work on the knitting in the round skill!
Additionally, you have the option of working with a worsted weight yarn or a chunky yarn and knitters know that working with chunky yarns means projects work up more quickly!
I think I need to make these for myself and the ladies I work with since our hands are always getting cold at the office!
Well, what do you think? Come up with your own project or check out the patterns I’ve included and get to creating with the rice stitch knitting pattern!
I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do and use it frequently! Go on now, grab some yarn and needles and get going!
