Stockinette Stitch Hat Pattern
While winter is a very long way off where I live, it’s never too early to get a start on making goodies for the coming cold months. And if you happen to live in a place that is cold much of the time, then you’re even more in need of new patterns for wintry weather accessories.
Personally, I really enjoy knitting hats and beanies. A group of my co-workers and I knit or crochet newborn hats almost every year to donate to the local hospitals.
Additionally, I’ve made various beanies for just about every member of my family (and extended family!) There’s just something about winter weather items, such as scarves, gloves and hats, that cause them to disappear, much like socks in the dryer.
Because of this, I am always putting beanies and hats into my rotation of projects. This pattern is quick and easy, so I can have a beanie ready to go in no time at all!
Calling All Beginners
As a beginning knitter, you learn the knit and purl stitches. When you alternate rows of knit and purl, you get the stockinette stitch. It is a very simple stitch to learn and is one you will use for the rest of your knitting life!
If you’re not familiar with the stockinette stitch, please check out our pattern and guide here before you try this pattern.
The stockinette stitch can be used in just about any project you might want to try. Because it is a very basic stitch, you can easily adapt it to most projects.
The stockinette stitch does have a tendency to curl around the edges, so you need to either work that natural occurrence into your finished design or knit a ribbing around the sides with another stitch, like the garter stitch.
This pattern does use the curl as part of the design to create a brim.
Stockinette Stitch Hat Materials
- To make this hat work up even faster, use a thick yarn, such as Lion Brand’s Wool-Ease. You will only need 1 skein.
- You will need 9 mm knitting needles, preferable in a longer length as the thick yarn takes up the length of the needles pretty quickly.
- Yarn sewing needle
- Pom-pom, if desired.
Time
You should be able to work up this hat in an hour, depending on your skill level.
Size
This pattern works up to measure 9”(22.9 cm) high and 17”(43 cm) around.
You can alter the size by adding more cast on stitches or working more rows.
Knitting Skill Level
This pattern is designed for a beginner. Most hat and beanie patterns will call for circular knitting needles, but this pattern is perfect if you’re not comfortable with using circular needles yet, or if you don’t have any handy.
